Why I make art:
In the summer of 2004, I took a road trip down the highway of Blues. It was in Clarksdale, MS that I found my creative direction and inspiration. The music and people of the Delta region invoke a love and passion that is truly contagious. My aim is to create art that captures the essence of human experiences both past and present.
In short, I make art to share the same love which others have.
Subject and process:
Having a strong musical upbringing made the transition from a performance platform to a visual platform very natural. Musically, I gravitated towards punk rock and eventually found the Blues as the place where all American music started. I find the ornamentation of written language to be a key element in my artwork. Words are an essential part of our ability to communicate whether they reside in a book, bathroom stall, or cell phone. Words give us context, words give us meaning, words give us inspiration.
I really enjoy the human experience and for that reason, most of my work involves people and text that reflects their experiences. The process in which I create artwork can be described as pop-folk art. All work is mixed media on wood. All work is a combination of a hand-made screen print and hand-painted acrylic or nail polish application. Text application is with combinations of acrylic and permanent marker.
